Amazing Rare Early Robert Wallace Martin Brothers Stoneware Squirrel Jug Pitcher 1875
A rare Robert Wallace Martin glazed stoneware jug or pitcher inscribed “R.W.Martin, London, 12 – 1875”. The jug is incised on both sides with squirrels jumping and sitting on a branch and eating a nut; while the front features a cat being warned off by thrush perched on a branch above a nest of chicks and a butterfly. Make sure you focus on the detailed pictures to fully appreciate this wonderful piece of work.
Height; 20 cms/8 inches.
Width: 13 cms/5 inches.
Condition: In amazing condition for age; one small firing fault to neck, one tiny frit to rim; no cracks or chips.
Provenance: Estate of a Sydney antiques dealer, acquired from a collector in the 1980s. There is also a small piece of paper attached to the inside rim of the handle, impossible to photograph and nearly impossible to read, but seems to be and old auction label for 1906 lot 27. Probably recorded by the collector.
